Market Baskets
This collection of stylish, colourful Kenyan baskets represents hours of handiwork by the women of Eastern Kenya. Each basket is handcrafted from sisal, a process that starts with the harvesting and preparing of the sisal fibers. Once brushed and dried, the fibers are hand dyed and the weaving can begin, taking place between day-to-day farming and household duties. It can take up to a week to complete a basket, depending on its size and complexity. Once finished, the baskets are handed to a fundi, or tradesperson, who adds the leather handles and details. The baskets then begin their journey to us in Canada, and ultimately, on to you!
